We all have been guilty of falling straight to bed with a full face on, knowing that it is a cardinal sin to sleep in your makeup. Even residue from not properly removing your makeup can impact your skin. Just in case you are unaware of the reasons why you shouldn’t sleep in your make up, let me break it down.
Sleeping in your makeup will cause…
- makeup to settle in and clog your pores
- acne and breakouts
- eye irritation and inflammation
- attraction of harmful bacteria to the skin and eyes
- skin dullness
Now if you have done it only few times, then you should not experience any of the issues that were mentioned. However, if you are a repeat offender then you will see some of these things appear. If you already have noticed a change in your skin, it’s not to late to reverse the damage a bit.
I have a two step routine that I use and it works like a charm. First, take your favorite brand of makeup wipes (mine are the Neutrogena Cleansing Towlettes) to remove the first layer of makeup and loosen any long wearing product (i.e. eyeliner, mascara, matte lipstick). Then follow up with your favorite cleanser to remove the rest.
I really like the Neutrogena Cleansing Towlettes because they don’t leave that stripped dry feeling to the skin once it has dried. They leave the skin feeling a bit moisturized and there is barely any makeup left behind.
If you are looking for a one step option, another alternative is using a oil-based cleanser. I prefer the MAC Cosmetics Cleanse Off Oil. This 2-in-1 product contains various oils that will breakdown your makeup. You can rinse and be on your way.
You will definitely see an improvement in your skin by simply making sure all of the makeup is removed before going to sleep.
